Number Selection (1–249) in KP Horary
The 1–249 number system is unique to KP horary. The zodiac from Aries 0°00' to Pisces 30°00' is divided into exactly 249 sub-arcs (based on the 27 nakshatras × 9 subs each, with slight spillover). Each sub is assigned a sequential number.
When the querent mentally selects a number (without being told what it represents), that number's starting degree becomes the horary Ascendant. The selection is considered spontaneous and instinctive — a cosmic reflection of the querent's inner state aligned with the moment of asking.
How to Ask for the Number
The astrologer asks the querent: "Please think of any number from 1 to 249." The querent should choose instinctively, without overthinking. The number is used as-is; it must not be forced or changed after selection.

Using the Number in Practice
- Querent gives a number, e.g., 137.
- Look up sub #137 in the KP table → note the starting sidereal degree of that sub.
- That degree becomes the horary Ascendant. Cast 12 house cusps using a Placidus calculator for the time and place of judgment.
- Place all 9 planets (Sun–Saturn + Rahu/Ketu) at their current positions for the moment of judgment.
- Proceed with standard KP house judgment from this horary Ascendant.
