Sub Lord Theory

The Sub Lord Theory is the single most important contribution of Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti to astrological science. Every degree in the zodiac belongs to a sign, a star (nakshatra), and a sub — a three-tier address. The sub lord at any address determines whether the results associated with that point will materialise and in what form.

Unlike classical Vedic astrology where a planet's results are derived primarily from its sign and house lord, KP insists that the sub lord is the final arbiter. This principle applies uniformly to natal charts, horary charts, and the timing of events through dashas.

Origin of Sub Lord Theory

Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti observed that planets in the same nakshatra and sign produced vastly different results for different individuals. He realised the finer sub-division within the nakshatra — the Sub — was responsible for this variation. This breakthrough became the cornerstone of what he named Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP).

The Sub Lord as Judge

The sub lord of any measured point (a planet's longitude or a house cusp) acts as the final judge. If the sub lord is a significator of the houses under consideration and does not deny results, the event promised by those houses will occur in the appropriate dasha period.

Sub Lord Denial

If the sub lord is in the star of a planet that owns or occupies the house opposite to what is desired (e.g., 12th from the queried house), it denies results. For example, for the 7th house (marriage), a 1st house sub lord in the star of a 12th-house planet can indicate denial or loss of partnership.

Planets vs Cuspal Sub Lords

Every planet has a sub lord (the sub in whose arc the planet's longitude falls). Every house cusp also has a sub lord. Cuspal sub lords govern the house's promise; planetary sub lords govern what time-period dasha the planet will give results for specific matters.

For each of the 12 bhavas, the sub lord of the cusp governs whether that bhava's results arise:
