Ruling Planets

Ruling Planets (RP) is one of the most distinctive concepts in KP astrology. At any given moment of judgment — whether for a natal reading, a horary query, or an election — certain planets are deemed to be "ruling" that moment. These planets are extracted from the state of the sky at that instant and serve as cosmic witnesses to the question being asked.

Prof. Krishnamurti used Ruling Planets as a cross-check: genuine significators of an event should appear among the Ruling Planets. If a planet is both a significator of the queried house AND a Ruling Planet, it is strongly confirmed as the dasha-bhukti lord that will trigger the event.

The Five Ruling Planets

Note: Some KP practitioners also add the Lagna Sub Lord (the sub lord of the ascendant degree) as a 6th Ruling Planet for horary work.

Validate Horary Charts

After casting a horary chart, the Ruling Planets should include planets that signify the queried matter. If there is no overlap, the chart may not be valid for that query.

Select Dasha Period

Among the significators of the event, the Ruling Planets narrow down which dasha–bhukti period will actually trigger the outcome. Periods belonging to Ruling Planets are given priority.

Birth Time Rectification

The Ruling Planets at the time of a known life event should match the house significators of that event in the natal chart. This provides a test bed for refining the birth time.
