Definition and Selection of Ruling Planets
Ruling Planets are determined at the exact moment a query is posed or a chart is judged. No birth time is needed β only the accurate time and place of judgment. The five standard Ruling Planets are: Day Lord, Lagna Sign Lord, Lagna Star Lord, Moon Sign Lord, and Moon Star Lord.
Step-by-Step Selection
- Day Lord: Note the day of the week at the moment of judgment. The lord of
that day is the first Ruling Planet. Sunday β SunMonday β MoonTuesday β MarsWednesday β MercuryThursday β JupiterFriday β VenusSaturday β Saturn
- Lagna Sign Lord: Calculate the sidereal Ascendant (using Krishnamurti Ayanamsa). The lord of the sign the Ascendant falls in is the second Ruling Planet.
- Lagna Star Lord: Identify the nakshatra of the Ascendant degree. The lord of that nakshatra is the third Ruling Planet.
- Moon Sign Lord: The lord of the sign occupied by the Moon is the fourth Ruling Planet.
- Moon Star Lord: The lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupies is the fifth Ruling Planet.
- (Optional) Lagna Sub Lord: The sub lord of the Ascendant degree can be added as an additional Ruling Planet, especially in horary.
Rahu and Ketu
Rahu and Ketu do not own signs in KP but they do own nakshatras. If the Moon or Lagna falls in Ardra/Swati/Shatabhisha (Rahu) or Ashwini/Magha/Mula (Ketu), the respective node becomes a Ruling Planet.
Duplicate Planets
It is common for the same planet to appear in more than one position (e.g., Saturn as Lagna lord and Moon star lord). Duplicates are counted once but are considered especially powerful Ruling Planets.
Retrograde Planets
Some KP practitioners exclude retrograde Ruling Planets for final event timing, though they are still listed. Prof. Krishnamurti himself did not always exclude them β different schools vary on this point.
Weak vs Strong RP
Among all Ruling Planets, those connected to the 11th house (house of fulfilment) in the horary/natal chart are considered the strongest for predicting positive outcomes. Day lord and Lagna star lord are generally weighted highest.
Worked Example
Scenario: A question is posed on a Wednesday at 10:30 AM. The sidereal Ascendant is Libra 18Β°10' (Swati nakshatra). The Moon is in Pisces 2Β°00' (Uttara Bhadrapada nakshatra).
- Day Lord: Wednesday β Mercury
- Lagna Sign Lord: Libra β Venus
- Lagna Star Lord: Swati β Rahu
- Moon Sign Lord: Pisces β Jupiter
- Moon Star Lord: Uttara Bhadrapada β Saturn
Ruling Planets: Mercury, Venus, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn. Any significator of the queried house that is also in this list is a confirmed dashanatha (trigger planet) for the event.
