Marakas (Killers)
In Vedic astrology, certain houses and planets are designated as "marakas" or killers. These astrological factors play a significant role in longevity assessment and can indicate potential timing of death when activated through dashas (planetary periods) or transits.
Houses of Life and Death
To understand marakas, we must first understand which houses relate to life and which relate to death:
Houses of Life
- 3rd House: Shows the vitality of one's existence
- 8th House: Shows longevity
For good longevity, these houses and their lords should be strong.
Houses of Death
- 2nd House: 12th from the 3rd (loss of vitality)
- 7th House: 12th from the 8th (loss of longevity)
For good longevity, these houses and their lords should be weak.
Maraka Sthanas (Killer Stations)
The rasis (signs) containing the 2nd and 7th houses are called maraka sthanas or killer stations. In rasi-ruled dashas that can indicate death, the dashas of these rasis can potentially bring death.
| Ascendant (Lagna) | 2nd House (Maraka Sthana) | 7th House (Maraka Sthana) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Taurus | Libra |
| Taurus | Gemini | Scorpio |
| Gemini | Cancer | Sagittarius |
| Cancer | Leo | Capricorn |
| Leo | Virgo | Aquarius |
| Virgo | Libra | Pisces |
| Libra | Scorpio | Aries |
| Scorpio | Sagittarius | Taurus |
| Sagittarius | Capricorn | Gemini |
| Capricorn | Aquarius | Cancer |
| Aquarius | Pisces | Leo |
| Pisces | Aries | Virgo |
Maraka Grahas (Killer Planets)
There are several ways a planet can qualify as a maraka graha (killer planet):
- Lords of Maraka Houses: The lords of the 2nd and 7th houses are primary maraka grahas. In planet-ruled dashas that can indicate death, the dashas of these planets can potentially bring death.
- Malefics Influencing Maraka Houses: If a malefic planet powerfully conjoins or aspects (using graha drishti) the 2nd or 7th house, it becomes a maraka graha.
- Malefics Influencing Maraka Lords: If a malefic planet powerfully conjoins or aspects the lord of the 2nd or 7th house, it becomes a maraka graha.
Examples of Maraka Identification
Example 1
- Lagna (Ascendant): Leo
- Saturn: in Sagittarius
- Mars: in Gemini
Maraka Analysis:
- Saturn is a maraka as it owns the 7th house (Aquarius)
- Mars is a malefic and aspects the 2nd house (Virgo) with its 4th house aspect
- Mars also aspects the 7th lord (Saturn in Sagittarius) with its 7th house aspect
- Therefore, Mars is also a maraka
Example 2
- Lagna (Ascendant): Pisces
- Mars: in Gemini
- Mercury: in Capricorn
- Saturn: in Aries
Maraka Analysis:
- Mars is a maraka as it owns the 2nd house (Aries)
- Mercury is a maraka as it owns the 7th house (Virgo)
- Saturn is in the 2nd house (Aries)
- Saturn aspects the 2nd lord Mars (with 3rd house aspect)
- Saturn aspects the 7th lord Mercury (with 10th house aspect)
- Therefore, Saturn is also a maraka, potentially stronger than Mars and Mercury
Practical Application
When assessing potential timing of death using dashas or transits, look for the involvement of:
- Maraka sthanas (2nd and 7th houses)
- Maraka grahas (lords of 2nd and 7th houses and malefics influencing them)
- Activation through dashas, antardashas, or transits
Remember that the presence of marakas alone is not sufficient to time death. Other factors such as longevity category, strength of life-giving houses (3rd and 8th), and remedial measures all play important roles in the final outcome.
The concept of marakas provides a framework for understanding potential threats to longevity in a chart. However, this knowledge should be used responsibly—to identify periods requiring caution and remedial measures, not to make definitive predictions about death.
An ethical astrologer will use this knowledge to help clients navigate challenging periods with awareness and appropriate preventive measures, always emphasizing that planetary influences create tendencies rather than fixed outcomes.
