Bhava Lagna (BL)
Bhava Lagna (भाव लग्न) is one of the special lagnas defined by Sage Parasara in Vedic astrology. It is positioned at the same point as the Sun at the time of sunrise and moves at the rate of one rasi (sign) per 2 hours. This means it moves at the same rate as the main lagna (ascendant).
Bhava Lagna represents the general flow of life events and circumstances. While it's mentioned in classical texts, Sage Parasara noted that it was defined mainly for the sake of completeness, and its practical applications are less emphasized compared to other special lagnas like Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna.
Calculation Method
The calculation of Bhava Lagna involves the following steps:
- Find the time of sunrise and Sun's longitude at sunrise on the day of birth.
- Find the difference between the birth time and the sunrise time. Convert this difference into minutes.
- This number directly gives the advancement of Bhava Lagna since sunrise, in degrees (1° per 4 minutes, or 15° per hour).
- Add Sun's longitude at sunrise (in degrees) to the above number.
- If the result exceeds 360°, subtract multiples of 360° to reduce it to the range 0°–360°.
- This final value is the longitude of Bhava Lagna (BL).
Example Calculation
Let's walk through an example of calculating Bhava Lagna:
Suppose a person was born at 7:23 pm. Sunrise at the birthplace was at 6:37 am on the birthday. At 6:37 am, Sun was at 24°17' in Capricorn.
- The time difference between birth and sunrise is: 7:23 pm – 6:37 am = 12 hours 46 minutes = 766 minutes
- This gives 766° as the advancement of Bhava Lagna since sunrise
- Sun's longitude at sunrise is 270° + 24°17' = 294°17' (Capricorn starts at 270°)
- Adding the advancement to Sun's longitude: 294°17' + 766° = 1060°17'
- Subtracting 360° twice: 1060°17' - (2 × 360°) = 340°17'
- So Bhava Lagna is at 10°17' in Pisces (as Pisces spans from 330° to 360°)
Movement Rate
Bhava Lagna moves at the rate of 15° per hour, or 1° per 4 minutes. This means it takes 2 hours for Bhava Lagna to move through one complete zodiac sign (rasi).
For example, if Bhava Lagna is at the beginning of Aries at 6:00 am, it will be at:
- 15° in Aries at 7:00 am
- The beginning of Taurus (30°) at 8:00 am
- The beginning of Gemini (60°) at 10:00 am
Comparison with Other Lagnas
Bhava Lagna moves at the same rate as the main lagna (ascendant), but it starts from a different position (Sun's position at sunrise rather than the eastern horizon at birth).
Compared to other special lagnas:
- Bhava Lagna moves at half the speed of Hora Lagna
- Bhava Lagna moves at 1/5 the speed of Ghati Lagna
- Bhava Lagna is less sensitive to birth time errors than Hora Lagna or Ghati Lagna
Practical Application
While Bhava Lagna is less commonly used in practical chart analysis compared to Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna, some astrologers consider it for:
- General life circumstances and events
- The overall flow and direction of life
- As a supplementary point to confirm readings from other lagnas
Sage Parasara mentioned that Bhava Lagna was defined mainly for the sake of completeness, suggesting that its practical applications may be limited compared to other special lagnas. Modern astrologers typically focus more on Hora Lagna for financial matters and Ghati Lagna for matters of power and authority.
