Sree Lagna (SL)

Sree Lagna (श्री लग्न) is one of the special lagnas defined by Sage Parasara in Vedic astrology. In Sanskrit, the word "Sree" means wealth. It also refers to Goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Narayana and the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Unlike other special lagnas that are based on the Sun's position at sunrise, Sree Lagna is calculated based on the Moon's position in its constellation (nakshatra). It is particularly important for analyzing prosperity and wealth in a birth chart.

Calculation Method

The calculation of Sree Lagna involves the following steps:

  1. Find the constellation (nakshatra) occupied by the Moon.
  2. Find the fraction of the constellation traversed by the Moon.
  3. Find the same fraction of the zodiac (360°).
  4. Add this amount to the longitude of the main lagna (ascendant).
  5. If the result exceeds 360°, subtract multiples of 360° to reduce it to the range 0°–360°.
  6. This final value is the longitude of Sree Lagna (SL).

Example Calculation

Let's walk through an example of calculating Sree Lagna:

Suppose a person has Moon at 13°06' in Libra and lagna (ascendant) at 25°05' in Virgo.

  1. Moon's longitude is 180° + 13°06' = 193°06' (Libra starts at 180°)
  2. Lagna's longitude is 150° + 25°05' = 175°05' (Virgo starts at 150°)
  3. Moon is in Swathi constellation, which runs from 6°40' to 20°00' in Libra
  4. Moon's advancement in its constellation is 13°06' - 6°40' = 6°26'
  5. As a fraction of the whole constellation (which spans 13°20' or 800 arc minutes), this is: 6°26' ÷ 13°20' = 386' ÷ 800' = 0.4825
  6. The same fraction of the zodiac is 0.4825 × 360° = 173.7° = 173°42'
  7. Adding this amount to the longitude of lagna: 175°05' + 173°42' = 348°47'
  8. So Sree Lagna is at 18°47' in Pisces (as Pisces spans from 330° to 360°)

Unique Calculation

Sree Lagna is unique among the special lagnas because:

  • It is based on the Moon's position rather than the Sun's position
  • It involves the nakshatra (lunar mansion) system
  • It requires calculating a proportional fraction rather than a simple time-based movement
  • It is added to the main lagna rather than being an independent point

This unique calculation method connects Sree Lagna to both the emotional nature (Moon) and the self-identity (lagna), making it a powerful indicator of how one's emotional nature influences prosperity.

Significance in Chart Analysis

Sree Lagna is particularly important when analyzing:

Sage Parasara mentioned that Sree Lagna is important for prosperity and is particularly useful in the analysis of Sudasa (a specific dasa system).

  • The sign occupied by Sree Lagna and its lord
  • Planets aspecting or conjoining Sree Lagna
  • The placement of Sree Lagna in divisional charts
  • The relationship between Sree Lagna, the main Lagna, and Hora Lagna (which also relates to wealth)

Strong and well-placed Sree Lagna can indicate good financial fortune and material prosperity, while afflicted Sree Lagna may suggest challenges in accumulating or maintaining wealth.

The connection to the Moon also suggests that Sree Lagna relates to how one's emotional nature and instincts influence their ability to attract and maintain prosperity.
