Graha Arudhas (Planetary Arudha Padas)

Just as Arudha Padas of houses show the illusions of the world related to matters signified by various houses, Graha Arudhas (Arudha Padas of planets) show the illusions or perceptions of the native related to matters signified by various planets.

While houses show various aspects of a person's life and their Arudhas show how they are perceived in the world, planets show various persons, forces, and situations that impact a person's life, and their Arudhas show the related perceptions by the person.

Computation of Graha Arudhas

Arudha Padas of all the nine planets (grahas) are computed as follows:

  1. Take the sign containing the planet of interest in the divisional chart.
  2. Find the sign owned by that planet (for planets owning two signs, take the stronger sign).
  3. Count signs from the sign containing the planet to the stronger sign owned by it (in zodiacal direction).
  4. Count the same number of signs from the stronger sign owned and find the ending sign.
  5. Exception: If the sign found in step 4 is in the 1st or 7th from the original sign containing the planet, then take the 10th sign from the sign found in step 4.
  6. The resulting sign contains the Arudha Pada of the planet of interest.

Note: For dual-sign lords (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn), the stronger sign is determined by various strength factors including occupancy by planets.

Significance of Graha Arudhas

Graha Arudhas reveal how a person perceives various situations and experiences in their life. Just as the perceptions of the world about a native can be totally different from reality, a native's perceptions about themselves, the world, and the situations they experience can differ significantly from reality.

Personal Perception

Graha Arudhas show how the native feels about situations, which may be completely different from both reality and how others perceive them. This understanding is crucial for astrological counseling.

Planetary Periods

During a planet's dasha (period), the position of its Arudha Pada relative to lagna indicates how the native will feel during that period, regardless of actual events or public perception.

Illusion vs. Reality

A planet may give good results in reality (based on its position from lagna) and good public perception (based on its position from AL), but the native may still feel unhappy if its Arudha Pada is poorly placed from lagna.

Psychological Insight

Graha Arudhas provide deep psychological insights into how a person interprets their experiences, which is valuable for counseling and understanding behavior patterns.

Examples of Graha Arudha Interpretation

Example 1: Moon's Arudha Pada

If Moon is in the 10th house (indicating good career developments) and owns the 2nd from AL and occupies AL (indicating increased status in others' eyes), but Moon's Arudha Pada is in the 12th from lagna, the native may feel frustrated and unhappy despite actual success and positive public perception.

Example 2: Ketu's Arudha Pada

If Ketu is in lagna (making one spiritual) and in the 3rd from AL (giving boldness and material success as a malefic), but Ketu's Arudha Pada is in the 5th house from lagna, the native may feel they are doing intelligent work and abstract analysis during Ketu's period, regardless of the spiritual transformation and material success actually occurring.

Understanding Graha Arudhas adds a crucial third dimension to chart analysis:

  1. Positions of planets with respect to lagna show reality
  2. Positions of planets with respect to AL show perceptions of people and material situation
  3. Positions of Arudha Padas of planets with respect to lagna show how the native perceives the situation

All three aspects are important for comprehensive astrological analysis and counseling. A good Vedic astrologer will master all three aspects to provide accurate guidance that addresses both external circumstances and internal experiences.
