Method of Three Pairs
The Method of Three Pairs is a classical technique in Vedic astrology for determining the approximate range of one's longevity. This method, described by Sage Parasara, examines three pairs of planets or mathematical points to classify a person's lifespan into short, middle, or long life categories.
The Three Pairs
This method examines the following three pairs of planets or mathematical points:
- Lagna Lord and 8th Lord: The lord of the ascendant and the lord of the 8th house (find the 8th house using the special table for Rudra calculation, not in the normal way)
- Moon and Saturn: The position of the Moon and Saturn
- Lagna and Hora Lagna (HL): The position of the ascendant and Hora Lagna
Determining Longevity Category
For each pair, we examine whether the planets/points occupy movable, fixed, or dual rasis (signs). Based on the combination, we determine the longevity category:
| Combination 1 | Combination 2 | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed + Dual | Movable + Movable | Long life (72-108 years) |
| Movable + Fixed | Dual + Dual | Middle life (36-72 years) |
| Movable + Dual | Fixed + Fixed | Short life (0-36 years) |
Classification of Rasis (Signs)
Movable (Chara)
- Aries
- Cancer
- Libra
- Capricorn
Fixed (Sthira)
- Taurus
- Leo
- Scorpio
- Aquarius
Dual (Dwiswabhava)
- Gemini
- Virgo
- Sagittarius
- Pisces
Combining Results from the Three Pairs
After determining the longevity category for each of the three pairs, we combine them as follows:
- All three pairs indicate the same category: That will be the combined classification.
- Two pairs indicate one category, one pair indicates another: The result given by two pairs dominates.
- All three pairs indicate different categories: Give preference to the third pair (Lagna and Hora Lagna). However, if Moon is in Lagna or the 7th house, then give preference to the second pair (Moon and Saturn).
Paramaayush (Maximum Longevity)
Parasara provided further guidance for determining the maximum longevity (paramaayush) based on the results from the three pairs:
| Two Pairs Indicate | Third Pair Indicates Short Life | Third Pair Indicates Middle Life | Third Pair Indicates Long Life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short Life | 32 years | 36 years | 40 years |
| Middle Life | 64 years | 72 years | 80 years |
| Long Life | 96 years | 108 years | 120 years |
Example Application
Let's apply the Method of Three Pairs to a hypothetical chart:
Chart Details
- Lagna: Taurus (Fixed)
- Hora Lagna: Aries (Movable)
- Moon: Taurus (Fixed)
- Saturn: Gemini (Dual)
- Venus (Lagna lord): Capricorn (Movable)
- Mercury (8th lord from special table): Cancer (Movable)
Analysis
- Pair 1: Lagna lord Venus is in Capricorn (Movable) and 8th lord Mercury is in Cancer (Movable). Movable + Movable = Long life
- Pair 2: Moon is in Taurus (Fixed) and Saturn is in Gemini (Dual). Fixed + Dual = Long life
- Pair 3: Lagna is in Taurus (Fixed) and Hora Lagna is in Aries (Movable). Fixed + Movable = Middle life
Result: Two pairs indicate long life and one pair indicates middle life. Therefore, "long life" dominates. Using the Paramaayush table, the maximum longevity is 108 years.
The Method of Three Pairs provides a systematic approach to estimating longevity in Vedic astrology. However, it's important to note that this method, like all longevity assessment techniques, is not infallible. There are exceptions not covered in this explanation, and one should not be overly biased by these calculations.
This method should be used as part of a holistic approach to chart interpretation, considering multiple factors including the strength of life-giving houses (3rd and 8th), the weakness of death-indicating houses (2nd and 7th), and the potential influence of remedial measures.
