Rasis (Zodiac Signs)

In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts called Rasis (ā¤°ā¤žā¤ļā¤ŋ), or zodiac signs. Each rasi spans 30 degrees of the 360-degree zodiac circle. These 12 divisions form the foundation of astrological analysis and interpretation.

Unlike Western astrology which uses a tropical zodiac based on the seasons, Vedic astrology uses a sidereal zodiac that is aligned with the fixed stars. This creates a difference of approximately 23 degrees between the two systems, resulting in many people having different sun signs in Vedic astrology compared to Western astrology.

Significance in Vedic Astrology

Rasis play a crucial role in Vedic astrology for several reasons:

Planetary Positions

The position of planets in different rasis at the time of birth forms the basis of the birth chart (Janma Kundali). Each rasi imparts its qualities to the planets placed in it.

House System

The rasi containing the ascendant (Lagna) becomes the first house, and subsequent rasis form the remaining houses. Each house governs specific areas of life.

Planetary Rulerships

Each rasi is ruled by a specific planet. The condition and placement of the ruling planet significantly affects the matters governed by that rasi.

Divisional Charts

Rasis are further divided into smaller segments to create divisional charts (Varga charts) that provide detailed insights into specific areas of life.

Classifications of Rasis

Rasis are classified in various ways based on their qualities, elements, and other attributes. These classifications help in understanding the nature and influence of different rasis.

Movable, Fixed, and Dual

Rasis are classified based on their quality or mode of operation.

Elements (Tattvas)

Each rasi is associated with one of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.

Odd and Even

Rasis are classified as odd (masculine) or even (feminine).

Rising and Day/Night

Rasis are classified based on how they rise on the eastern horizon and their strength during day or night.

Gunas

Each rasi is associated with one of the three gunas: Sattva (purity), Rajas (passion), or Tamas (inertia).

Varnas (Social Classes)

Rasis are associated with the four traditional social classes or varnas of Hindu society.

Limbs of Vishnu

Each rasi corresponds to a specific part of Lord Vishnu's cosmic body.

Directions and Colors

Each rasi is associated with a specific direction and color.

Ayurvedic Connections

Rasis have associations with Ayurvedic principles and health indications.

Understanding the various characteristics and classifications of rasis is essential for accurate astrological analysis. Each rasi has its own unique qualities and influences that affect different aspects of life. By studying these characteristics in depth, astrologers can provide more nuanced and precise interpretations of birth charts.
