Ashtakavarga (अष्टकवर्ग)

Ashtakavarga is a unique system in Vedic astrology that provides a simple yet powerful method for chart analysis and transit predictions. Sage Parasara presented this technique specifically for Kali Yuga, when human beings might find it difficult to cope with too many complicated principles.

The word "Ashtakavarga" consists of two parts: "Ashtaka" meaning "consisting of eight" and "varga" meaning "a group." It is a system of analyzing a chart with respect to a group of 8 reference points: the 7 planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) plus the Lagna (Ascendant).

Core Concept

When we analyze planetary positions with respect to lagna, we have the concept of good and bad placements. For example, Jupiter in the 9th from lagna is well placed, while Jupiter in the 3rd is badly placed. Mars in the 3rd from lagna is well placed, while Mars in the 9th is badly placed.

However, lagna is not the only reference point in a chart. All planets serve as reference points, representing different energy sources in a native. Ashtakavarga tells us the benefic positions of lagna and seven planets with respect to each other.

Applications

Ashtakavarga has several important applications in Vedic astrology:

  • Analyzing the strength of a natal chart
  • Predicting the effects of transits
  • Determining favorable and unfavorable periods
  • Selecting auspicious times (muhurtas) for important activities
  • Guidance for Vastu (Vedic architecture)

Types of Ashtakavarga

Bhinna Ashtakavarga (BAV)

"Bhinna" means "separate." This is the individual Ashtakavarga of each planet, showing the number of benefic points (rekhas) in each sign for that specific planet. It helps determine how favorable a sign is for a particular planet.

Samudaya Ashtakavarga (SAV)

"Samudaya" means "group." This is the sum of all seven planets' Bhinna Ashtakavargas. It shows the overall strength of each sign in the chart. Signs with 30 or more rekhas are considered strong and favorable.

Prastaara Ashtakavarga (PAV)

"Prastaara" means "spread-out." This is a detailed spreadsheet showing exactly which references contribute benefic points to each sign for a particular planet. It's useful for detailed transit analysis.

Sodhya Pindas

Sodhya Pindas are special numerical values derived from the Ashtakavarga system after applying certain reductions (Trikona Sodhana and Ekaadhipatya Sodhana). These pindas are very important in predicting key events, especially in transit analysis.

Ashtakavarga is not limited to rasi charts. It can be applied to all divisional charts for more specific analysis of different areas of life.
