Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha

Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha is a rasi-based dasha system in Vedic astrology that is particularly effective for predicting material success. The term "Kendradi" means "starting with quadrants" (kendras), and this dasha system follows a specific sequence of houses - first covering the quadrants, then the panapharas (succedent houses), and finally the apoklimas (cadent houses).

This dasha is similar to another system called "Kendradi Graha Dasa" or "Moola dasa," which works with planets in quadrants, panapharas, and apoklimas from the stronger of lagna and Moon. However, Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha works with rasis (signs) rather than planets.

According to Parasara, this dasha system is ruled by Sri Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth and prosperity), making it particularly effective for predicting periods of material success and prosperity in one's life.

Calculation Method

The calculation of Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha involves the following steps:

  1. Determine the Dasha Seed: Dashas start from the stronger of lagna (ascendant) and the 7th house. This rasi is called the "dasha seed."
  2. Determine the Direction: The direction of reckoning dashas is based on whether lagna is in an odd sign or an even sign:
    • If lagna is in an odd sign, the direction is forward (zodiacal)
    • If lagna is in an even sign, the direction is backward (anti-zodiacal)
  3. Special Exceptions:
    • If Saturn is in the stronger of lagna and 7th house, the dasha order is forward regardless of the sign
    • If Ketu is in the stronger of lagna and 7th house, the dasha order is reversed from what it would normally be
  4. Dasha Sequence: The sequence follows a specific pattern:
    • First 4 dashas belong to the kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses) from the dasha seed
    • Next 4 dashas belong to the panapharas (2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th houses) from the dasha seed
    • Last 4 dashas belong to the apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th houses) from the dasha seed
  5. Dasha Periods: The length of each dasha is determined using the same method as in Narayana Dasha (based on the position of the lord of the dasha rasi with respect to the dasha rasi itself)

Examples of Dasha Calculation

Example 1: Lagna in Gemini, Gemini stronger than Sagittarius

  • Dasha seed is Gemini
  • Gemini is an odd sign, so the direction is forward
  • Kendras from Gemini (forward): Gemini (1st), Virgo (4th), Sagittarius (7th), Pisces (10th)
  • Panapharas from Gemini (forward): Cancer (2nd), Libra (5th), Capricorn (8th), Aries (11th)
  • Apoklimas from Gemini (forward): Leo (3rd), Scorpio (6th), Aquarius (9th), Taurus (12th)
  • Complete dasha sequence: Ge, Vi, Sg, Pi, Cn, Li, Cp, Ar, Le, Sc, Aq, Ta

Example 2: Lagna in Taurus, Taurus stronger than Scorpio

  • Dasha seed is Taurus
  • Taurus is an even sign, so the direction is backward
  • Kendras from Taurus (backward): Taurus (1st), Aquarius (4th), Scorpio (7th), Leo (10th)
  • Panapharas from Taurus (backward): Aries (2nd), Capricorn (5th), Libra (8th), Cancer (11th)
  • Apoklimas from Taurus (backward): Pisces (3rd), Sagittarius (6th), Virgo (9th), Gemini (12th)
  • Complete dasha sequence: Ta, Aq, Sc, Le, Ar, Cp, Li, Cn, Pi, Sg, Vi, Ge

Philosophical Basis

According to Parasara, there is a deep philosophical basis for the different dasha systems:

Narayana's Movement

Parasara taught that the quadrants are ruled by Sri Maha Vishnu (Narayana) and the trines are ruled by Sri Maha Lakshmi. If we cover the trines of lagna, then go to the trines of another quadrant and cover all the 12 signs in that fashion, that sequence is quadrant-based and hence Narayana rules it. This progression is seen for dual signs in Narayana Dasha.

Lakshmi's Movement

On the other hand, if we cover the quadrants of lagna first, then go to the quadrants of 5th/9th and finally cover the quadrants of the 3rd trine, then the sequence is trine-based and Sri Lakshmi rules it. In other words, the sequence 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th etc is quadrant-based and it is ruled by Narayana. The sequence 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th is trine-based and it is ruled by Lakshmi.

So Kendradi Rasi Dasha uses the movement ruled by Lakshmi. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity. This is why this dasha shows the periods of prosperity. It shows the progression of lagna using the movement ruled by Sri Lakshmi.

Interpretation Principles

When interpreting Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha, consider the following principles:

  • Material Success: This dasha is particularly effective for predicting periods of material success and prosperity.
  • Arudha Padas: Pay special attention to dashas of signs containing important arudha padas:
    • Signs containing AL (Arudha Lagna) can bring status and recognition
    • Signs containing A10 (Rajya Pada) can bring career success
    • Signs containing GL (Ghatika Lagna) can bring power and authority
  • Atmakaraka: Signs containing AK (Atmakaraka) often give success and fulfillment.
  • Amatyakaraka: Signs having a strong argala (intervention) of AmK (Amatyakaraka) can show coming under the decisive influence of good advisors, ministers, and bureaucrats. This is particularly important in the charts of politicians.
  • Connections to Lagna: Signs that have connections to lagna through their lords can bring personal success and recognition.

Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha is related to several other dasha systems:

  • Sudasa (Sree Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha): This is a similar dasha system that starts from Sree Lagna instead of lagna. Sree Lagna is the Lakshmi sthana (residence of Lakshmi) in a horoscope, so its progression using the movement ruled by Sri Lakshmi is considered even more important for predicting material prosperity.
  • Kendradi Graha Dasa (Moola Dasa): This is a planet-based version that goes through the dashas of planets in quadrants, panapharas, and apoklimas from the stronger of lagna and Moon.
  • Mandooka Dasa: Some authors have presented variations of Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha as "Mandooka Dasa," but according to Parasara, the true Mandooka Dasa is based on mandooki gati (the 3rd/11th jump) and is used for predicting the results of wars and death.

Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha is a powerful tool for predicting periods of material success and prosperity in a person's life. It is particularly useful when used in conjunction with other dasha systems like Narayana Dasha and Sudasa. While Narayana Dasha is important for power and general life events, Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha and Sudasa are more focused on material prosperity due to their association with Sri Lakshmi.
