Karakas (Significators)

In Vedic astrology, Karakas (ā¤•ā¤žā¤°ā¤•) are significators that represent specific people, relationships, and matters in life. The word "karaka" literally means "one who causes" in Sanskrit. Karakas are the planets that cause or bring about events related to specific areas of life.

Understanding karakas is essential for accurate astrological analysis as they form the foundation for interpreting how planets influence different aspects of a person's life. There are three distinct types of karakas, each serving a specific purpose in astrological analysis.

Naisargika Karakas (Natural Significators)

The natural significators of various matters in life, used in general predictive astrology.

Chara Karakas (Variable Significators)

Variable significators that change from chart to chart, showing people who play important roles in one's life.

Sthira Karakas (Fixed Significators)

Fixed significators used primarily for timing the death of relatives.

The Three Types of Karakas

Vedic astrology recognizes three distinct types of karakas, each with a specific purpose and application:

Naisargika Karakas

Natural significators that show everything that exists in creation. They include all nine planets (including Rahu and Ketu) and are presided over by Brahma. These karakas are used in general predictive astrology (Phalita Jyotish) and show both people and impersonal matters.

Chara Karakas

Variable significators that change from chart to chart. They include seven planets plus Rahu (excluding Ketu) and are presided over by Vishnu. These karakas show people who play important roles in one's sustenance, achievements, and spiritual progress.

Sthira Karakas

Fixed significators that include only the seven physical planets (excluding Rahu and Ketu). They are presided over by Shiva and are primarily used for timing the death of relatives. They show the destruction of the physical body.

Primary Naisargika Karakas (Natural Significators)

Naisargika Karakas are natural significators of various matters in life. The table below shows the primary natural significators for each house in the birth chart:

Chara Karakas (Variable Significators)

It's important not to mix up the three types of karakas in astrological analysis. Each type has a specific purpose and application. For general predictive astrology, use Naisargika Karakas. For analyzing the influence of important people in one's life, use Chara Karakas. For timing the death of relatives, use Sthira Karakas.

The concept of karakas is one of the fundamental principles of Vedic astrology that allows for precise and nuanced interpretation of a birth chart. By understanding the different types of karakas and their proper application, astrologers can provide more accurate and detailed predictions.
