Transits and Natal References
In transit analysis, we correlate the current positions of planets with various reference points in the natal chart. These reference points, known as natal references, serve as anchors for interpreting the effects of planetary transits. The most important natal reference is the Moon, but other references like the Ascendant (Lagna), Paaka Lagna, and Arudha Padas are also significant.
Transits from Moon (Janma Rasi)
The most popular natal reference in transit analysis is the Moon. As the significator of mind, analyzing planetary positions with respect to the Moon shows the mental state and experiences of the native.
The rasi (sign) occupied by the Moon in the natal chart is called "janma rasi." Planets give different results when transiting in different houses from janma rasi. These results depend on:
- The inherent nature of the transiting planet
- What the planet stands for in the natal chart (its lordship and placement)
- The house being transited relative to janma rasi
For example, if Mars is the 5th lord in a natal chart, then the worries given by him during his transit in the 8th house from janma rasi may pertain to children. If Mars is the 10th lord, then the worries may pertain to career.
Standard Transit Results from Janma Rasi
The following tables show the standard results given by planets when transiting different houses from janma rasi. These are general indications that should be adapted based on the specific significations of planets in the natal chart.

Other Natal References
While Moon is the most important natal reference, there are other significant reference points for transit analysis:
Lagna (Ascendant)
Lagna is the hub of vitality and one's personality in a chart. Using the Ashtakavarga tables, we can determine whether the transit of a planet in a house from lagna is favorable or not. The influence exerted by a transit planet on the house occupied by it depends on its inherent nature and its significations in the natal chart.
For example, Jupiter transiting in Taurus may give marriage to someone born in Scorpio lagna, because Taurus is the 7th house from Scorpio. Saturn transiting in Aries may give relationship problems for someone born in Libra lagna, because Aries is the 7th house from Libra.
Paaka Lagna
While a malefic planet transiting in janma rasi may give mental worries and a malefic planet transiting in natal lagna may affect the vitality, paaka lagna explicitly stands for the physical self. A malefic planet transiting in paaka lagna may give bodily complaints.
Arudha Padas
Planets occupying or aspecting arudha padas in transit may give relevant results. For example, Saturn's transit in A10 can be bad for career, Jupiter's transit in A9 is good for fortune, and so on.
Sahams
Sahams are significant points in the zodiac that are useful in transit analysis. For example, when the 7th lord or Venus transits close to vivaha saham, one may get married. When the 6th lord, 8th lord, Mars, or Rahu transits close to kali saham, one may have an accident.
Transits and Divisional Charts
An advanced approach to transit analysis involves studying the interaction between:
- Natal divisional charts and the transit rasi chart: This shows how innate potential in a particular area of life is influenced at a given time to result in action at the physical level. This helps in coarse timing of events.
- Natal rasi chart and transit divisional charts: This shows how the potential at the physical level is transformed into an event in a particular area of life. This helps in fine-tuning the timing of events.
For example, if we want to predict marriage, we can look at how the transit rasi chart interacts with the natal navamsa chart (which shows marriage). Similarly, for predicting events related to children, we can examine how the transit rasi chart interacts with the natal D-7 chart.
Transits and Ashtakavarga
Ashtakavarga is a powerful tool for transit analysis. It evaluates the strength of transits based on eight references:
- Bhinna Ashtakavarga (BAV): If a planet has 5 or more rekhas (beneficial points) in its transit rasi in its BAV, it will produce good results. If it has 3 or fewer rekhas, it will produce bad results.
- Samudaya Ashtakavarga (SAV): Planets transiting in rasis with more than 30 rekhas in SAV usually bring favorable results. Planets transiting in rasis with fewer than 25 rekhas in SAV usually bring unfavorable results.
- Kakshyas and Prastaara Ashtakavarga: Each rasi is divided into eight kakshyas (segments) of 3°45' each. The transit of a planet in a kakshya with a rekha in its Prastaara Ashtakavarga is favorable.
Timing with Sodhya Pindas
Sodhya Pindas can be used to time events related to specific areas of life:
- Take the number of rekhas in a specific house from a planet in that planet's BAV.
- Multiply this count with the planet's sodhya pinda.
- Divide the product by 27 to get a nakshatra, or by 12 to get a rasi.
- Saturn's transit in the resulting nakshatra or rasi brings misfortune relating to the original house, while Jupiter's transit brings good fortune.
For example, to time events related to father, we look at the 9th house from Sun. To time events related to marriage, we look at the 7th house from Venus.
| Planet | House | Area of Life |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 9th | Father |
| Moon | 4th | Mother |
| Mars | 3rd | Siblings |
| Mercury | 10th | Profession |
| Jupiter | 5th | Children |
| Venus | 7th | Marriage |
| Saturn | 8th | Longevity |
Transit analysis is a complex but rewarding aspect of Vedic astrology. By understanding how transiting planets interact with various natal references, astrologers can make precise predictions about the timing and nature of events in a person's life. For comprehensive predictions, it's best to use transit analysis in conjunction with dashas, annual charts, and other predictive techniques.
