Vimshothari Dasha

Vimshothari Dasha is the most widely used predictive system in Vedic astrology. The term "Vimshothari" means "120," referring to the total duration of the dasha cycle. According to Sage Parasara, this dasha system is particularly suitable for Kali Yuga, our current cosmic age.

In Kali Yuga, the maximum human lifespan (paramaayush) is considered to be 120 years, which aligns with the complete cycle of Vimshothari Dasha. This system divides a person's life into planetary periods that unfold in a specific sequence, with each planet ruling for a fixed number of years.

Dasha Periods and Sequence

The Vimshothari Dasha system assigns specific years to each of the nine planets:

PlanetDasha Length (Years)Significations
Sun (Surya)6Authority, father, government, vitality
Moon (Chandra)10Mind, emotions, mother, public
Mars (Mangal)7Energy, courage, brothers, land
Rahu (North Node)18Obsession, foreigners, manipulation
Jupiter (Guru)16Wisdom, children, teachers, fortune
Saturn (Shani)19Discipline, longevity, delays, service
Mercury (Budha)17Communication, intelligence, business
Ketu (South Node)7Spirituality, isolation, liberation
Venus (Shukra)20Relationships, luxury, arts, vehicles
Total120

The sequence of dashas follows the order shown in the table. For example, if a person's first dasha is Jupiter, the sequence would be: Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), Mercury (17 years), Ketu (7 years), Venus (20 years), Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), and Rahu (18 years).

Calculation of Vimshothari Dasha

The calculation of Vimshothari Dasha involves the following steps:

  1. Identify the Nakshatra (Constellation): Determine which of the 27 nakshatras the Moon occupies at the time of birth.
  2. Find the Nakshatra Lord: Each nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine planets. This planet becomes the lord of the first dasha.
    Nakshatra Lords:
    • Ketu: Ashwini, Magha, Moola
    • Venus: Bharani, Poorva Phalguni, Poorva Ashadha
    • Sun: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
    • Moon: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
    • Mars: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha
    • Rahu: Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
    • Jupiter: Punarvasu, Vishakha, Poorva Bhadrapada
    • Saturn: Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
    • Mercury: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati
  3. Calculate Remaining Portion: Determine how much of the nakshatra has been traversed by the Moon and how much remains. The remaining portion as a fraction of the total nakshatra length (13°20') determines how much of the first dasha remains at birth.
  4. Calculate Balance of First Dasha: Multiply the dasha length of the nakshatra lord by the remaining portion of the nakshatra. This gives the balance of the first dasha at birth.
  5. Determine Subsequent Dashas: After the first dasha, subsequent dashas follow in the order shown in the table above, each for its full duration.

Example Calculation

If a person is born with Moon at 2°23' in Aquarius, which falls in Dhanishtha nakshatra:

  • Dhanishtha is ruled by Mars, so the first dasha is Mars dasha
  • Dhanishtha spans from 23°20' Capricorn to 6°40' Aquarius (total 13°20')
  • Moon's position at 2°23' Aquarius means it has traversed 9°03' of the nakshatra
  • Remaining portion = (13°20' - 9°03')/13°20' = 4°17'/13°20' = 0.32125
  • Balance of Mars dasha = 7 years × 0.32125 = 2.25 years (2 years, 3 months)
  • After Mars dasha, the sequence continues with Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), etc.

Sub-Periods (Antardashas)

Each mahadasha (major period) is divided into nine antardashas (sub-periods), one for each planet:

  • Order of Antardashas: The antardashas within a mahadasha start with the mahadasha lord itself and then follow the same sequence as the mahadashas.
  • Duration of Antardashas: The duration of each antardasha is proportional to the dasha length of its lord. For example, in a 20-year Venus mahadasha:
    • Venus antardasha = (20/120) × 20 years = 3 years, 4 months
    • Sun antardasha = (6/120) × 20 years = 1 year
    • Moon antardasha = (10/120) × 20 years = 1 year, 8 months
    • And so on...
  • Further Sub-Divisions: Each antardasha can be further divided into pratyantardashas, sookshma-antardashas, prana-antardashas, and deha-antardashas for increasingly precise timing.

Variations of Vimshothari Dasha

While the standard approach is to start the dasha sequence from the lord of Moon's nakshatra, there are important variations:

Dasha from Different Stars

Instead of using Moon's nakshatra, the dasha can be started from:

  • Kshema Star: 4th nakshatra from Moon's nakshatra
  • Utpanna Star: 5th nakshatra from Moon's nakshatra
  • Adhana Star: 8th nakshatra from Moon's nakshatra

These variations are particularly useful for longevity assessment and when the standard Vimshothari Dasha doesn't align well with known life events.

Dasha from Lagna

Some authorities recommend calculating Vimshothari Dasha based on the nakshatra of the Ascendant (Lagna) instead of the Moon, especially when:

  • The Lagna is stronger than the Moon
  • The Moon is debilitated or combust
  • The Lagna lord is stronger than the Moon

Interpretation Principles

When interpreting Vimshothari Dasha periods, consider the following principles:

Tripod of Life Principle

According to Pt. Sanjay Rath's "Tripod of Life" principle:

  • Sun (soul) is important for judging mahadashas
  • Moon (mind) is important for judging antardashas
  • Lagna (body) is important for judging pratyantardashas

Divisional Chart Analysis

Each planet gives results according to its placement in relevant divisional charts:

  • D-1 (Rashi) for general life events
  • D-9 (Navamsa) for marriage and partnerships
  • D-10 (Dasamsa) for career and status
  • D-7 (Saptamsa) for children
  • Other divisional charts for specific areas of life

Functional Nature

Consider the functional nature of planets based on house lordship:

  • Lords of trines (1, 5, 9) are functional benefics
  • Lords of dusthanas (6, 8, 12) are functional malefics
  • Lords of kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) have mixed results
  • Lords of 2nd and 11th houses give wealth

Planetary Relationships

The relationship between dasha and antardasha lords affects results:

  • Friendly planets enhance each other's results
  • Neutral planets give mixed results
  • Enemy planets obstruct each other's results
  • Conjunctions and aspects between them are significant

Vimshothari Dasha is a versatile predictive tool that can be used for general life predictions (as a phalita dasha) as well as for longevity assessment (as an ayur dasha). Its accuracy depends on precise birth time, as an error of just a few minutes can shift dasha dates by several days or weeks.

While Vimshothari Dasha is the most widely used system, it's important to remember that no single dasha system can perfectly predict all events. For comprehensive predictions, astrologers often use multiple dasha systems in conjunction with transits, annual charts, and other predictive techniques.
