Avasthas (States) of Planets
In Vedic astrology, planets are not just static entities but dynamic forces that can exist in various states or conditions called "avasthas." These states significantly influence how effectively a planet can deliver its results. Just as a person's state of mind and physical condition affect their performance, a planet's avastha determines its capacity to manifest its significations.
1. Avasthas Related to Age
Just as humans have different capabilities at different ages, planets also have age-related states that affect their effectiveness. These states are determined by the planet's longitude within a sign.
| Avastha | Meaning | In Odd Signs | In Even Signs | Results Given |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saisava | Childhood | 0° - 6° | 24° - 30° | One quarter |
| Kumaara | Adolescence | 6° - 12° | 18° - 24° | Half |
| Yuva | Youth | 12° - 18° | 12° - 18° | Full |
| Vriddha | Old Age | 18° - 24° | 6° - 12° | Some |
| Mrita | Dead | 24° - 30° | 0° - 6° | None |
Examples
- A planet at 23° in Cancer (even sign) will be in Kumaara avastha (adolescence) and give half of its results.
- A planet at 19° in Libra (odd sign) will be in Vriddha avastha (old age) and not be very effective.
- A planet at 14° in Sagittarius (odd sign) will be in Yuva avastha (youth) and give all of its results.
- A planet at 27° in Pisces (even sign) will be in Saisava avastha (childhood) and give one quarter of its results.
Note: While age-related avasthas are important, they are just one factor among many. Just as there are child prodigies and wise elders, a planet can give good results regardless of its age-related state if other strength factors are favorable.
2. Avasthas Related to Alertness
These avasthas indicate how alert or aware a planet is, affecting its ability to deliver results.
Jaagrita (Awake)
- A planet in its exaltation rasi or own rasi
- Gives full results
Swapna (Dreaming)
- A planet in a rasi owned by a neutral or friendly planet
- Gives medium results
Sushupta (Asleep)
- A planet in its debilitation rasi or a rasi owned by an enemy
- Gives negligible results
3. Avasthas Related to Attitude and Mood
Just as a person's mood affects their performance, a planet's attitude-related state influences its results. There are nine primary mood-related avasthas:
Deepta (Bright)
A planet in its exaltation rasi
Swastha (Content)
A planet in its own rasi
Mudita (Delighted)
A planet in a good friend's rasi
Saanta (Peaceful)
A planet in a friend's rasi
Deena (Sad)
A planet in a neutral planet's rasi
Duhkhita (Distressed)
A planet in an enemy's rasi
Vikala (Confused)
A planet joined by malefic planets
Khala (Mischievous)
A planet in a malefic planet's rasi
Kopita (Angry)
A planet joined closely by Sun
Additional Mood-Related Avasthas
Lajjita (Ashamed)
A planet in the 5th house joined by Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu
Garvita (Proud)
A planet in its exaltation rasi or moolatrikona rasi
Kshudhita (Hungry)
A planet in an enemy's rasi or conjoined/aspected by enemies or conjoined by Saturn
Trishita (Thirsty)
A planet in a watery rasi, aspected by enemies without benefic aspects
Mudita (Delighted)
A planet in a friend's sign, conjoined/aspected by friends and conjoined by Jupiter
Kshobhita (Agitated)
A planet conjoined by Sun and aspected by malefics or enemies
Impact on Chart Interpretation
- If a house contains planets in Kshudhita or Kshobhita avasthas, the significations of the house are negatively affected.
- If a planet in the 5th house is in Lajjita avastha, there may be losses related to progeny.
- If a planet in the 7th house is in Kshobhita avastha, there may be loss of spouse.
4. Sayanaadi Avasthas (States Related to Activity)
These twelve avasthas related to activity are considered the most important of all states. They are determined through a complex calculation involving the planet's constellation, navamsa position, and other factors.
| Avastha | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Sayana | Lying down, resting |
| Upavesana | Sitting down |
| Netrapaani | Eyes and hands |
| Prakaasana | Shining |
| Gamana | Going (on the move) |
| Aagamana | Coming, returning |
| Sabhaa | Being at an assembly |
| Aagama | Coming/Acquiring |
| Bhojana | Eating |
| Nriyalipsaa | Longing to dance |
| Kautuka | Being eager |
| Nidraa | Sleeping |
Strength of Activity
After determining the activity-related avastha, further calculations yield the strength of the activity, which can be:
- Cheshta: Full results
- Drishti: Medium results
- Vicheshta: Very little results
Special Considerations
Parasara highlighted some special considerations for Sayanaadi Avasthas:
- If a benefic is in Sayana avastha, the house benefits from its presence.
- If a malefic is in Nidraa avastha in the 7th house without malefic conjunction/aspect, it's auspicious.
- If a malefic is in Bhojana avastha, the house containing it is destroyed.
- If a malefic is in the 5th house in Sayana or Nidraa avastha, it's auspicious.
- If a malefic is in the 8th house in Sayana or Nidraa avastha, it brings death by royal wrath.
- If a malefic occupies the 10th house in Bhojana or Sayana avastha, it brings miseries.
- If a benefic or a planet in own/exaltation rasi occupies the 1st, 5th, 7th, or 10th house in Prakasana, Nrityalipsaa, or Kautuka avasthas, it brings Raja Yoga.
While avasthas provide valuable insights into how effectively a planet can deliver its results, they should be considered as part of a holistic chart analysis. The state of a planet related to age, alertness, mood, and activity plays a role in the results it gives, but the houses it influences in various divisional charts are more important in determining the final outcomes.
As with all astrological principles, avoid making predictions based solely on thumbrules and look-up tables. Integrate avastha analysis with other chart factors for a comprehensive interpretation.
