Transits: Miscellaneous Topics

In Vedic astrology, transits (Gochara) provide valuable insights into timing of events. While the basic principles of transits focus on correlating natal and transit positions by rasi (sign), there are several additional techniques that enhance predictive accuracy. This page covers important miscellaneous transit techniques that are essential for comprehensive transit analysis.

These techniques include both rasi-based and nakshatra-based methods. Nakshatras (lunar mansions) are as important as rasis in transit analysis, and the interactions between natal and transit nakshatras can reveal significant timing information that might not be apparent through rasi analysis alone.

Murthis (Forms/Idols)

The Murthi technique helps judge the effectiveness of a planet's transit through a particular rasi. When a planet enters a new sign, the house position of the transit Moon (relative to natal Moon) at that exact moment determines the planet's "form" or "murthi" during its entire transit through that sign.

House from Natal MoonMurthi (Form)MeaningResults
1st, 6th, 11thSwarna (Golden form)Highest potencyHighly favorable
2nd, 5th, 9thRajata (Silver form)Good potencyFavorable
3rd, 7th, 10thTaamra (Copper form)Reduced potencyUnfavorable
4th, 8th, 12thLoha (Iron form)Lowest potencyHighly unfavorable

For example, if Mercury enters Gemini when the transit Moon is in the 1st house from a person's natal Moon, Mercury will be in Swarna Murthi (golden form) during its entire transit through Gemini. This means Mercury will give its full positive results during this transit. Conversely, if Mercury enters Gemini when transit Moon is in the 12th house from natal Moon, Mercury will be in Loha Murthi (iron form) and may not give its full results, even if the transit is otherwise favorable.

Rasi Gochara Vedha

Even when a planet is transiting in a favorable house from natal Moon, its positive effects can be obstructed by another planet transiting in the "vedha sthana" (house of obstruction). This concept is called Rasi Gochara Vedha.

Transiting PlanetAuspicious Houses from Natal MoonCorresponding Vedha Sthanas (Houses of Obstruction)
Sun3, 6, 10, 119, 12, 4, 5
Moon1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 115, 9, 12, 2, 4, 8
Mars3, 6, 1112, 9, 5
Mercury2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 115, 3, 9, 1, 8, 12
Jupiter2, 5, 7, 9, 1112, 4, 3, 10, 8
Venus1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 128, 7, 1, 10, 9, 5, 11, 6, 3
Saturn3, 6, 1112, 9, 5

Important exceptions to note:

  • Sun and Saturn do not cause vedha on each other
  • Moon and Mercury do not cause vedha on each other

For example, if Mercury is transiting in the 4th house from natal Moon (which is favorable), but there is a planet in the 3rd house from natal Moon, that planet causes vedha on Mercury, potentially obstructing its positive effects.

Taras (Stars)

The Tara system classifies nakshatras based on their position relative to the natal Moon's nakshatra. Each nakshatra, counted from the natal Moon's nakshatra, has specific qualities that affect transit results.

Constellation from Natal MoonNameMeaningQuality
1st, 10th, 19thJanma TaraBirthMixed
2nd, 11th, 20thSampat TaraWealthGood
3rd, 12th, 21stVipat TaraDangerBad
4th, 13th, 22ndKshema TaraWell-beingGood
5th, 14th, 23rdPratyak TaraObstaclesBad
6th, 15th, 24thSaadhana TaraAchievementGood
7th, 16th, 25thNaidhana/Vadha TaraDeathBad
8th, 17th, 26thMitra TaraFriendGood
9th, 18th, 27thParama Mitra TaraBest friendGood

If a planet is transiting in a bad tara (Vipat, Pratyak, or Naidhana), it may not give its full positive results. This is particularly important when analyzing the transits of dasha and antardasha lords.

Special Nakshatras/Taras

In addition to the general tara classification, certain nakshatras counted from the natal Moon's nakshatra have special significance:

Position from Janma NakshatraSpecial NakshatraMeaningSignification
1stJanma NakshatraBirthGeneral well-being
4thJaati NakshatraCommunityCommunity, profession, class
7thNaidhana NakshatraDeathDeath and suffering
10thKarma NakshatraProfessionCareer, workplace
12thDesa NakshatraCountryOne's country, homeland

19thAadhaana NakshatraEpoch/ConceptionFamily well-being
22ndVainaasika NakshatraDestructiveDestruction
25thMaanasa NakshatraMindMental state

Benefics or malefics transiting in these special nakshatras bring good or bad results related to the area covered by the nakshatra. For example, malefics transiting in Jaati Nakshatra may alienate one from their community, while benefics transiting in Karma Nakshatra may bring career success.

Nakshatra-based Aspects

In addition to the standard rasi-based aspects, planets also cast aspects on specific nakshatras:

Sun and Moon

Aspect the 14th and 15th constellations from them

Mars

Aspects the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 8th, and 15th constellations from him

Mercury and Venus

Aspect the 1st and 15th constellations from them

Jupiter

Aspects the 10th, 15th, and 19th constellations from him

Saturn

Aspects the 3rd, 5th, 15th, and 19th constellations from him

Effect of Aspects

Natural benefics give good results related to the constellations they aspect, while natural malefics give bad results to the constellations they aspect.

Constellations and Body Parts

When planets transit through different nakshatras (counted from janma nakshatra), they are said to dwell in different parts of the body. This has two important applications:

  1. Predicting standard results for planetary transits in different constellations
  2. Identifying planets causing health issues in specific body parts

Sun's Transit

  • 1st nakshatra: Mouth/Face - Destruction
  • 2nd-5th: Head - Influx of wealth
  • 6th-9th: Chest - Victory
  • 10th-13th: Right hand - Wealth
  • 14th-19th: Two feet - Poverty
  • 20th-23rd: Left hand - Physical ailments
  • 24th-25th: Eyes - Gains
  • 26th-27th: Private parts - Death

Moon's Transit

  • 1st-2nd: Face - Great fear
  • 3rd-6th: Head - Well-being
  • 7th-8th: Back - Victory over enemies
  • 9th-10th: Eyes - Money
  • 11th-15th: Heart - Comforts and peace
  • 16th-18th: Left hand - Quarrels
  • 19th-24th: Two feet - Going abroad
  • 25th-27th: Right hand - Financial gains

Mars's Transit

  • 1st-2nd: Mouth/Face - Death
  • 3rd-8th: Two feet - Separation
  • 9th-11th: Chest - Victory
  • 12th-15th: Left hand - Poverty
  • 16th-17th: Head - Gains
  • 18th-21st: Face - Great fear
  • 22nd-25th: Right hand - Well-being
  • 26th-27th: Eyes - Going abroad

Mercury, Jupiter, Venus

  • 1st-3rd: Head - Grief
  • 4th-6th: Face - Gains
  • 7th-12th: Two hands - Misfortune
  • 13th-17th: Stomach - Amassing of wealth
  • 18th-19th: Private parts - Destruction
  • 20th-27th: Two feet - Honor and fame

Saturn, Rahu, Ketu

  • 1st: Face - Grief
  • 2nd-5th: Right hand - Comforts
  • 6th-8th: Right leg - Travels
  • 9th-11th: Left leg - Destruction
  • 12th-15th: Left hand - Gains
  • 16th-20th: Stomach - Pleasures
  • 21st-23rd: Head - Comforts
  • 24th-25th: Eyes - Comforts
  • 26th-27th: Back - Death

If a planet dwells in a particular body part during transit and some natural malefics aspect it or cause vedha on it, then the planet may give suffering related to that body part. For example, if Sun is dwelling in the chest (6th-9th nakshatras from janma nakshatra) and is in an unfavorable murthi (copper or iron form), it may cause chest-related health issues.

Latta (Kick)

Latta is a nakshatra-based planetary kick. Each planet has latta (kick) on a specific constellation based on its transit position. If a transit planet has latta on the constellation occupied by Moon or lagna in the natal chart, then unfavorable results related to that planet's significations may occur.

Purolatta (Forward Kick)

  • Sun: 12th nakshatra forward
  • Mars: 3rd nakshatra forward
  • Jupiter: 6th nakshatra forward
  • Saturn: 8th nakshatra forward

Prishtha Latta (Backward Kick)

  • Moon: 22nd nakshatra backward
  • Mercury: 7th nakshatra backward
  • Venus: 5th nakshatra backward
  • Rahu: 9th nakshatra backward

The effects of latta depend on the house lordship of the planet in the natal chart:

  • If the 6th lord has latta on janma nakshatra or lagna nakshatra, troubles related to litigation, disease, or enemies may occur
  • If the 7th lord has latta on janma nakshatra or lagna nakshatra, troubles related to marriage, spouse, or relationships may occur
  • If an important planet in the 10th house has latta on janma nakshatra or lagna nakshatra, career troubles may occur

Generally, we see some loss related to the natal significations of a planet having latta on janma nakshatra or lagna nakshatra in transit.

Sarvatobhadra Chakra

Sarvatobhadra Chakra is a specialized chart that shows all-round well-being and various auspicious and inauspicious results. The name means "auspicious in all directions" or "all-round well-being."

This chart consists of 81 squares (9×9) containing:

  • 28 nakshatras (including Abhijit)
  • 12 rasis (zodiac signs)
  • 5 tithi groups (lunar days)
  • 7 weekdays
  • 16 vowels and 20 consonants (Sanskrit alphabet)

Vedha (Obstruction)

When a planet occupies a nakshatra in transit, it causes vedha (obstruction) on the contents of squares along three lines:

  • One vertical or horizontal line
  • Two crossward (diagonal) lines

Using Sarvatobhadra Chakra

To use this chart for prediction, identify the following in the natal chart:

  1. The constellation occupied by Moon or any special tara
  2. The rasi occupied by lagna or any house of interest
  3. The first/prominent consonant and vowel in the native's name
  4. The tithi of birth (janma tithi) or a special tithi
  5. The weekday of birth (janma vaara)

Then study the vedha caused on these by different planets in transit:

  • Vedha by benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) is favorable
  • Vedha by malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) is unfavorable

If several transiting benefics have simultaneous vedha on several natal points, good results may be expected. Conversely, if several malefics have vedha on important natal points, unfavorable results are likely.

These miscellaneous transit techniques provide valuable additional layers of analysis beyond basic rasi transits. While no single technique should be used in isolation to make predictions, when combined with standard transit analysis, dasha periods, and annual charts, these methods can significantly enhance predictive accuracy.

It's important to note that nakshatra-based techniques divide people into 27 groups and cannot be completely accurate on their own. These methods should be used in conjunction with other chart-sensitive methods for comprehensive predictions. The most accurate predictions come from integrating multiple predictive techniques and confirming an event through several different methods.
