Sudasa
Sudasa is a rasi dasha system in Vedic astrology, also known as "Sree Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha" or simply "Rasi Dasha." Unlike Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha which is based on the progression from lagna (ascendant), Sudasa is based on the progression from Sree Lagna (SL), which is considered the Lakshmi sthana (residence of Lakshmi) in a horoscope.
Sudasa is particularly important for predicting materialistic matters such as money, power, and authority. It can be used to forecast financial matters and issues related to status and power. If a political leader occupies a position of power, they are likely enjoying a favorable dasha as per Sudasa. Similarly, if a businessperson sees increasing profits, they are probably experiencing a favorable Sudasa period. Conversely, someone struggling with tight finances may be going through an unfavorable Sudasa period.
Calculation Method
The calculation of Sudasa involves the following steps:
- Starting Point: Dashas start from the sign containing Sree Lagna (SL).
- Direction: The direction of reckoning dashas is based on whether SL is in an odd sign or an
even sign:
- If SL is in an odd sign, the direction is forward (zodiacal)
- If SL is in an even sign, the direction is backward (anti-zodiacal)
Note: This refers to odd and even signs, not odd-footed and even-footed signs.
- Dasha Sequence: The sequence follows a specific pattern:
- First 4 dashas belong to the kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses) from SL
- Next 4 dashas belong to the panapharas (2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th houses) from SL
- Last 4 dashas belong to the apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th houses) from SL
- Dasha Periods: The length of each dasha is determined using the same method as in Narayana Dasha (based on the position of the lord of the dasha rasi with respect to the dasha rasi itself).
- First Dasha Exception: Only a fraction of the first dasha is left at birth. This fraction is
found using the formula: (30° – SL's advancement in its sign) / 30°
Example Calculation
Let's consider an example where SL is at 12°21' in Capricorn:
- Starting Point: Dashas start from Capricorn, the sign containing SL.
- Direction: Because Capricorn is an even sign, the direction of reckoning dashas is backward.
- Dasha Sequence:
- First 4 dashas (kendras from Cp, reckoned backward): Capricorn, Libra, Cancer, Aries
- Next 4 dashas (panapharas from Cp, reckoned backward): Sagittarius, Virgo, Gemini, Pisces
- Last 4 dashas (apoklimas from Cp, reckoned backward): Scorpio, Leo, Taurus, Aquarius
- Dasha Periods: Using Narayana Dasha calculation method, we get:
Rasi Dasha Length (Years) Capricorn 2 Libra 2 Cancer 11 Aries 12 Sagittarius 2 Virgo 10 Gemini 5 Pisces 1 Scorpio 2 Leo 8 Taurus 7 Aquarius 3 - First Dasha Fraction: SL is at 12°21' in Capricorn. Fraction of first dasha left at birth = (30° – 12°21') / 30° = (1800' – 741') / 1800' = 0.5883
First dasha of Capricorn is of 2 years, and 0.5883 of it is 1.1766 years (approximately 1 year, 2 months, 3 days, 14 hours). This is the remainder of Capricorn dasha at birth. After this, Libra dasha of 2 years will start.
Interpretation Principles
When interpreting Sudasa, consider the following principles:
Financial Prosperity
- Dashas of HL (Hora Lagna), 7th from HL, and signs aspecting HL bring financial prosperity
- If the lord of the dasha sign occupies or aspects HL, it improves the chance of financial prosperity
- If the lord of HL occupies or aspects the dasha sign, it also improves the chances of financial prosperity
Power and Authority
- The same principles apply for GL (Ghatika Lagna), but the results are power and authority instead of financial prosperity
- Dashas of GL, 7th from GL, and signs aspecting GL bring power and authority
- If the lord of the dasha sign occupies or aspects GL, it improves the chance of gaining power
- If the lord of GL occupies or aspects the dasha sign, it also improves the chances of gaining power
Status and Recognition
- Upachayas (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th houses) from any house stand for the growth of matters signified by that house
- AL (Arudha Lagna) stands for one's status, so dashas of upachayas from AL bring growth of status
- Dasha of the 11th house from AL is particularly favorable
- The 8th and 12th houses from AL bring setbacks to one's status, and their dashas can be unfavorable
Example Interpretations
Example 1: Political Leader
Consider a political leader whose GL is in Cancer. Capricorn is the 7th house from GL and can bring power and authority. If Capricorn's lord Saturn aspects GL, and Moon (the lord of GL) aspects Capricorn, then Capricorn dasha would be very favorable for attaining a position of power and authority.
If Capricorn also contains AL (Arudha Lagna) and A5 (arudha pada of the 5th house), it further enhances the potential for power. AL shows status, and A5 can show power, as the 5th house represents one's following. A5 shows things based on which the world forms an impression about one's following and can represent the trappings of power.
Example 2: Chief Minister
Consider a political leader whose SL is at 22°22' in Sagittarius. Dashas start from Sagittarius (an odd sign), so the direction is zodiacal. The dasha sequence would be:
- Kendras: Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo
- Panapharas: Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, Libra
- Apoklimas: Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio
If Libra contains AL, GL, and HL, its dasha as per Sudasa would give status, power, and wealth. This could coincide with the native becoming a powerful political leader, such as a Chief Minister.
Relationship with Other Dasha Systems
Sudasa works well in conjunction with other dasha systems:
- Narayana Dasha: While Sudasa is excellent for predicting prosperity, Narayana Dasha is important for predicting power and general life events. For comprehensive predictions, both systems should be analyzed together.
- Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasha: This is similar to Sudasa but starts from lagna instead of Sree Lagna. Both are based on the movement ruled by Sri Lakshmi and are good for predicting material prosperity.
- Vimshothari Dasha: This planet-based dasha system can be used alongside Sudasa to get a more complete picture of a person's life events.
Sudasa is a powerful tool for predicting periods of material prosperity, power, and status in a person's life. Its association with Sree Lagna, which is considered the Lakshmi sthana (residence of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth) in a horoscope, makes it particularly effective for predicting financial matters and issues related to power and authority.
For comprehensive predictions, astrologers often analyze Sudasa in conjunction with other dasha systems like Narayana Dasha. While Sudasa focuses on material prosperity, Narayana Dasha provides insights into power and general life events. The combination of these systems allows for a more nuanced and accurate understanding of the timing of various life events.
