Samudaya Ashtakavarga (SAV)

Samudaya Ashtakavarga (SAV), also known as Sarva Ashtakavarga, is the collective Ashtakavarga of all seven planets. "Samudaya" means "group" or "collection," indicating that it represents the combined strength of all planets in each sign.

SAV provides a comprehensive view of the overall strength of each sign in a horoscope, which is valuable for general predictions and transit analysis.

How to Calculate Samudaya Ashtakavarga

To calculate the SAV, we simply add the number of rekhas (benefic points) in the Bhinna Ashtakavargas (BAVs) of all seven planets for each sign. The calculation process is as follows:

  1. Calculate the BAV for each of the seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn)
  2. For each sign, add the number of rekhas from all seven planets' BAVs
  3. Record the sum in each sign

The maximum possible value in any sign is 56 (7 planets × 8 references), though in practice, the values typically range from about 20 to 40.

Example Calculation

Let's say we have calculated the BAVs for all seven planets and found the following distribution of rekhas:

PlanetAriesTaurusGeminiCancerLeoVirgoLibraScorpioSagittariusCapricornAquariusPisces
Sun535344235455
Moon325363455535
Mars434343251334
Mercury747443444364
Jupiter435637435655
Venus874332464443
Saturn334323234534
SAV Total342534252625222928302930

In this example, Aries and Gemini have the highest strength with 34 rekhas each, while Libra has the lowest with only 22 rekhas.

Interpretation of Samudaya Ashtakavarga

The number of rekhas in each sign in the SAV indicates the overall strength and favorability of that sign:

  • 30 or more rekhas: The sign is very strong. Matters signified by the house falling in such a sign flourish, and planets transiting in such a sign bring good results.
  • 25-29 rekhas: The sign is of average strength.
  • Less than 25 rekhas: The sign is weak. Matters signified by the house falling in such a sign suffer, and planets transiting in such a sign bring unfavorable results.

Applications of Samudaya Ashtakavarga

Transit Analysis

SAV is particularly valuable for transit predictions. When planets transit through signs with high SAV values, they tend to give favorable results, regardless of their natural benefic or malefic nature.

For example, if Saturn transits through a sign with 32 rekhas in SAV, its typically challenging effects may be significantly mitigated.

Muhurta Selection

When choosing muhurtas (auspicious times) for important activities like weddings or housewarmings, one should look at the strengths, as per SAV of the natal chart, of the signs containing lagna, Moon, and Sun in the muhurta chart.

Signs containing 30 or more rekhas in SAV are considered favorable for such activities.

Samudaya Ashtakavarga can be calculated for divisional charts as well, not just the rasi chart. This allows for more specific analysis of different areas of life.
