Kalachakra Dasa
Kalachakra Dasa is considered one of the most respected predictive systems in Vedic astrology. As Sage Parasara stated in "Brihat Parasara Hora Sastram": "There is another dasa called Kalachakra dasa, which is the most respectable of all dasa systems."
Kalachakra literally means "the wheel of Time." It shows how the wheel of time unfolds events in the life of an individual. According to tradition, Lord Shiva explained this dasa system to Goddess Parvati.
Nakshatra Classification
Kalachakra Dasa divides the 27 nakshatras into two main groups:
| Group | Nakshatras |
|---|---|
| Savya Group (Zodiacal) | Aswini, Bharani, Krittika Punarvasu, Pushyami, Aasresha Hasta, Chitra, Swaati Moola, Poorvaashaadha, Uttaraashaadha Poorvabhaadrapada, Uttarabhaadrapada, Revati |
| Apasavya Group (Anti-Zodiacal) | Rohini, Mrigasira, Aardra Makha, Poorva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni Visaakha, Anooraadha, Jyeshtha Sravanam, Dhanishtha, Satabhisha |
The first 3 nakshatras belong to the savya group, the next 3 to the apasavya group, and so on in alternating fashion.
Kalachakra Structure
Kalachakra (wheel of Time) is constructed by drawing 2 sets of 12 houses for savya and apasavya groups of nakshatras:
- Main Sequence: The 12 zodiac signs in order (either zodiacally or anti-zodiacally)
- Mirrored Sequence: The mirror images of the signs in the main sequence (the other sign owned by the same planet)
For example, the mirror image of Aries is Scorpio (both ruled by Mars). The mirror image of Taurus is Libra (both ruled by Venus). However, Cancer and Leo are their own mirror images as they are the only signs owned by their lords (Moon and Sun).
The main sequence and the mirrored sequence together form a sequence of 24 rasis. There are two such sequences – one for the savya group and one for the apasavya group.
Dasa Periods and Calculation
The duration of a dasa is based on its owner:
| Planet | Signs | Dasa Years |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | 5 |
| Moon | Cancer | 21 |
| Mars | Aries & Scorpio | 7 |
| Mercury | Gemini & Virgo | 9 |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius & Pisces | 10 |
| Venus | Taurus & Libra | 16 |
| Saturn | Capricorn & Aquarius | 4 |
Calculation Steps
- Identify the Nakshatra Pada: Determine which of the 27 nakshatras and which pada (quarter) the Moon occupies at birth.
- Find the 9-Rasi Sequence: Each nakshatra pada is associated with a sequence of 9 rasis.
- Calculate Remaining Portion: Determine how much of the nakshatra pada has been traversed by the Moon and how much remains.
- Calculate Balance of First Dasa: Multiply the dasa length of the nakshatra lord by the remaining portion of the nakshatra. This gives the balance of the first dasa at birth.
- Determine Subsequent Dasas: After the first dasa, subsequent dasas follow in the order of the 9-rasi sequence, each for its full duration.
Deha and Jeeva Rasis
Each nakshatra pada has associated Deha (body) and Jeeva (spirit/life) rasis:
- For Savya Nakshatras: The first rasi in the 9-rasi sequence is called "Deha rasi" (body sign) and the last one is called "Jeeva rasi" (spirit/life sign).
- For Apasavya Nakshatras: The first rasi is called "Jeeva rasi" and the last one is called "Deha rasi" (the definition is reversed).
Deha rasi shows the body and Jeeva rasi shows the spirit. Benefics and malefics transiting in them affect them positively and negatively (respectively):
- Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus transiting in one's Jeeva rasi may bring a positive spirit and cheerfulness.
- Mars, Sun, Saturn, and Rahu transiting in one's Jeeva rasi may cause lack of enthusiasm.
- Mars, Sun, Saturn, and Rahu transiting in one's Deha rasi may bring accidents or health issues.
Gatis (Special Movements)
While dasas generally progress in a regular fashion, some irregularities can occur. These special movements are called "Gatis" and have specific effects:
Simhaavalokana Gati (Lion's Leap)
A trinal leap (from Sagittarius to Aries or vice versa; from Pisces to Scorpio or vice versa).
Effects: Fear of animals, loss of friends, distress to near relations, fall in dungeons, danger from poison and weapons, fall from a vehicle, fever, destruction of house, or death of father or elders, loss of position.
Markati Gati (Monkey's Leap)
Temporary reversal of direction (e.g., from Cancer to Leo in savya nakshatras or from Leo to Cancer in apasavya nakshatras).
Effects: Danger from water, distress to father, loss of position, anger of rulers, wandering in forests, or loss of wealth, agriculture, and animals, death of father or elders.
Mandooki Gati (Frog's Leap)
Leaving one rasi and jumping over it (e.g., from Virgo to Cancer or Leo to Gemini in savya nakshatras).
Effects: Distress to relatives, elders and father, trouble from poison, weapons, enemies, thieves, or distress to wife, loss of children, fever, sickness, and loss of position.
Directional Influences
Parasara listed directions to prefer and directions to avoid while traveling during different leaps:
- In the leap from Virgo to Cancer, east will give great results.
- In the leap from Leo to Gemini, east should be avoided.
- In the leap from Sagittarius to Aries, journeys should be avoided.
Interpretation Principles
When interpreting Kalachakra Dasa periods, consider the following principles:
Basic Interpretation
Dasa of a rasi gives:
- The natural results of the rasi (e.g., Pisces may give saattwik religious activities)
- Results of the house and planets in that rasi
- Results of the lord of that rasi
Samudaaya Ashtakavarga (SAV)
SAV plays an important role in deciding the results in a dasa:
- Rasis with 30 or more rekhas in D-10 SAV bring the best phases in career
- Rasis with 30 or more rekhas in D-24 SAV bring the best periods for learning
- Rasis with too few rekhas may bring unfavorable results
Divisional Charts
Results should be interpreted using relevant divisional charts:
- D-1 (Rashi) for general life events
- D-9 (Navamsa) for marriage and partnerships
- D-10 (Dasamsa) for career and status
- D-7 (Saptamsa) for children
- Other divisional charts for specific areas of life
Sub-Periods (Antardashas)
Each dasa is divided into nine antardashas:
- Antardashas start from the dasa rasi itself
- The duration of each antardasha is proportional to the dasa length of its lord
- The relationship between dasa and antardasha lords affects results
Kalachakra Dasa was called "the most respectable dasa of all dasas" by Parasara. While Vimshothari Dasa focuses on the state of the native's mind, and Narayana Dasa shows the direction taken by one's life, Kalachakra Dasa depends on Moon's navamsa and focuses on the state of the inner self and the sense of connectedness in one's mind.
It shows how connected one is with respect to the events in one's life. For example, a political leader may gain power (shown by other dasas) but if Kalachakra Dasa of a weak house is running, their inner self may not feel connected with their career events. These three dasas provide different angles to view the same kaleidoscope that life is.
